The Shire of Gingin is privileged to have a very rich heritage from shipwrecks off our coast pre-dating European settlement to the Great Northern Stock Route which passes through our Shire and was utilised by pioneers of the State to having one of WA's oldest rural towns with Gingin gazetted in 1871. 

Our heritage is very long and rich and thus, the Shire seeks to preserve it to the best of our abilities. 

Cultural Heritage Management Plan

The Cultural Heritage Management Plan (CHMP) has been initiated and drafted to exist as a living document and to strengthen the continuing partnership between the Shire of Gingin and the Yued Nyoongar People, whose traditional country includes the Shire of Gingin area.

Municipal Heritage Inventory

There are numerous buildings throughout the Shire of Gingin with cultural heritage significance. Under the Heritage Act 2018 the Shire of Gingin is required to compile and maintain a heritage inventory of places in the Shire which are, or may become, places of cultural heritage significance.

State Heritage Register

Some of the places listed on the Shire of Gingin’s Local Heritage Survey are also listed on the State Heritage Register.

The State Register is a list of places representing the history and development of Western Australia with statutory application. Entry into the State Register is the highest recognition awarded to heritage places at a State level.
