Coastal Hazard Risk Management and Adaptation

The Shire of Gingin, Shire of Dandaragan, State government agencies and the Northern Agricultural Catchments Council have been working together to prepare Coastal Adaptation Plans. These plans will help communities from Guilderton to Jurien Bay prepare for coastal hazards such as long term erosion and inundation.

This partnership has prepared coastal erosion hazard maps (see links below) that will inform the preparation of the Shire’s Coastal Adaptation Plan. The project is being undertaken in accordance with State Planning Policy 2.6: Coastal Planning Policy, which outlines specific planning guidance for coastal managers across Western Australia.

How can I be involved?

The Shires have released an online survey to ensure that the community’s values and attitudes inform the design of short and long term coastal erosion management solutions.

The survey is available at the following link and asks questions related to: what you value most about the coast; favourite beaches and coastal erosion; and, attitudes towards various erosion management approaches. The survey takes less than 10 minutes to complete and will close on Tuesday 27 June 2017. All users of the coast are encouraged to complete the survey.

The survey follows on from community engagement sessions held in Jurien Bay and Lancelin on 27-28 May 2017. The survey results will inform the design of erosion management strategies and a draft coastal adaptation plan. The draft coastal adaptation plan is expected to be released for public comment, through various community engagement activities, in the second half of 2017.

Coastal Hazard Maps

The attached Frequently Asked Questions should be read before viewing the hazard maps. It is important to note that these maps do not predict future shoreline positions. The maps indicate the inland boundary of an area that may be vulnerable to coastal erosion over various planning timeframes. Identifying these areas is necessary for future planning purposes.
