The Shire would like to provide comment in relation to an article on the Lancelin Facebook page (
"$250K GRANT STILL IN LIMBO") to clarify the questions raised regarding this project and its progression. The Shire was not asked to comment on this project’s progress prior to the publication of the article so we are taking the opportunity now to provide this clarification to the public.

The reason this project has not been implemented yet is due to the ongoing erosion that has occurred in the area, particularly around inundation breach points identified at Hopkins St and an access track adjacent to the Caravan Park.
Council is currently reassessing the situation and a new draft design is being prepared. The new works will be focused on creating a large grassed area for tourists and the creation of additional dune structure for added erosion protection to reduce the potential impacts to the caravan site, the community and infrastructure. Once prepared, the new draft (based on the previous scope of works) will be put out for public comment. This preparation time was factored into the revised November date supplied to Mr Porter’s office as mentioned in the article.
Mr Porter’s office has been kept fully abreast of the project and ongoing developments by the Shire. It should also be noted that Council has not received any of the $250,000 of funding for this project from Mr Porter’s office yet and won’t until such time as a viable and well researched development plan can be presented.
Council is well aware of the public’s impatience with the lack of action to implement a more long term strategy to address coastal erosion in Lancelin however, there are many factors which have to be taken into consideration.
As previously communicated, the State Government requested Council undertake more extensive research on coastal erosion and coastal impacts so that a robust strategy to address this matter may be developed. The State Government has supplied part of the funding (through grants) to do this.
Council has made steady progress with this request having received the Coastal Inundation Study in August this year and due to additional grants being received, they are moving steadily towards receiving several more positive outcomes in the near future. Once adequate research has been undertaken a better informed long term strategy can be prepared.
