The fire at Lancelin which has burnt through approximately 130 hectares was first reported on Tuesday, 15 October. As of 7pm on 16 October the blaze was fully contained and 90% controlled. Fire fighters have continued to patrol the fire since last evening in case of any flare ups. There are thankfully none to report.

The Shire of Gingin and the Incident Controller, Tim McGrade, would like to extend their sincere thanks and appreciation to the following who were instrumental in combating Tuesday's dangerous blaze:

  • Bushfire Brigade Volunteers
  • Volunteer Fire & Rescue
  • DFES Career Fire & Rescue
  • DFES Career Management Staff
  • St John Ambulance
  • WA Police & Police Airwing
  • Business owners of Lancelin and Ledge Point for supplies of food, fuel, etc. to the firefighting effort
  • Shire staff

Without their dedicated assistance this fire could have ended in significant disaster but as a result of their quick action, no homes or lives were lost.

The Shire of Gingin would also like to acknowledge that on 20 June 2019 significant mitigation burning was undertaken in the Lancelin area, particularly along Casserley Way in addition to Kendall Rd, Collins St and Cockram Road. This caused some consternation at the time with complaints regarding the smoke but thanks to the completion of this burn, no homes were lost due to approximately a 75% reduction in the fuel load on Casserley Way.

Whilst mitigation burning can inconvenience residents, its benefit was well and truly demonstrated at Tuesday’s blaze.

As reported via other media outlets, the blaze is suspicious with 6 ignition points which WA Police are now investigating. If anyone in the area saw any suspicious behaviour, please contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 and report it to WA Police.
