It is with tremendous pride that the Shire of Gingin congratulates senior staff member, Bob Kelly, on receiving the Australian Red Cross International Service Award.

On Friday, 17 September, Bob was presented with the International Service Medal by Aisling Blackmore, Chairperson WA Red Cross Divisional Advisory Board, at a ceremony in Perth. This award recognises aid workers who represent the Red Cross overseas and who display exemplary service of a commendable nature over a lengthy period of time, usually during times of conflict or natural disaster.

Over the last 30 years in between working for local government, Bob completed humanitarian deployments as a delegate for the Red Cross in Somalia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Rwanda, South Sudan, North Kenya, India and Bougainville where he undertook missions that improved the quality of life for victims of war and disaster.

One of Bob’s most memorable assignments was in Somalia during the 1990s where he was tasked to provide humanitarian aid during the country’s devastating war and drought crisis. During that time he and two other co-delegates were held hostage by Somali warlords for 48 hours until Bob managed to negotiate their release and subsequent escape.

In contrast to his difficult and dangerous missions, a highlight of his Red Cross career was establishing the first Red Cross Unit with a fellow colleague at Lodwa in Turkana, Northern Kenya which is still in operation today, nearly 26 years later.

A former colleague nominated Bob for the award in May this year which was verified by the International Committee of Red Cross in Geneva and the Australian National Red Cross, making him one of a very select few Australians to receive the award since its inception.

“We are incredibly proud of Bob and wholeheartedly commend him on receiving this award,” said Shire of Gingin CEO, Aaron Cook. “We are also grateful to have his extraordinary skill set on our management team.”

Bob is currently employed as the Executive Manager Regulatory and Development Services for the Shire of Gingin and continues to volunteer for the Red Cross.
