Coastal Hazard Risk Management and Adaptation

Our Coast Our Future – CHRMAP Community Engagement Session Lancelin

The Shire of Gingin will be hosting a community engagement session to provide the public an opportunity to view and discuss the Shire’s draft Coastal Risk Management and Adaptation Plan (CHRMAP) and associated maps. Coastal engineers, planners and Shire representatives will be on hand to discuss the information in person. Details of the session are as follows:

When: Saturday 28 April 2018 from 10am – 1pm

Letters have been sent to ratepayers and stakeholders in affected coastal areas – which include Seabird, Ledge Point and Lancelin – concerning details of the engagement session.

Following the community engagement session and invitation to make a submission on the draft CHRMAP, these can be made in writing to the Chief Executive Officer on or before 4.00pm Friday, 29 June 2018.

Draft Coastal Hazard Risk Management and Adaption Plan

The Shire of Gingin, Shire of Dandaragan, State government agencies and the Northern Agricultural Catchments Council have been working together to prepare Coastal Adaptation Plans. These plans will help communities from Guilderton to Jurien Bay prepare for coastal hazards such as long term erosion and inundation.

This partnership has prepared coastal erosion hazard maps (see links below) that will inform the preparation of the Shire’s Coastal Adaptation Plan. The project is being undertaken in accordance with State Planning Policy 2.6: Coastal Planning Policy, which outlines specific planning guidance for coastal managers across Western Australia.

How can I be involved?

The Shires are committed to ensuring the community's values and attitudes inform the preparation of Coastal Adaptation Plans. To achieve this the Shires have undertaken the following activities to date:

  • April 2017 - information packages mailed to relevant landowners
  • May - community engagement sessions held in Jurien Bay and Lancelin
  • June - community survey (available for completion online and hard copy)

The Shires, together with State agencies and coastal specialists, are using the information gathered from these activities to prepare draft Coastal Adaptation Plans. It is expected the draft Plans will be released for public comment in the second half of 2017. The Shires are likely to host further community engagement sessions during the public comment period.

Further information will be provided on this webpage and the Shires' Facebook pages, once available.

Coastal Hazard Maps

The attached Frequently Asked Questions should be read before viewing the hazard maps. It is important to note that these maps do not predict future shoreline positions. The maps indicate the inland boundary of an area that may be vulnerable to coastal erosion over various planning timeframes. Identifying these areas is necessary for future planning purposes.
