Lancelin Fire Update

Please attribute the information below to Shire President, Cr Wayne Fewster.

Further to yesterday’s bushfire at Lancelin, the following update is provided:

Road Management – at the time of this update the fire is contained and under control, with fire crews attending the last of the hot spots, however traffic is being escorted into Lancelin owing to power safety issues. There is also a considerable amount of dust and smoke affecting visibility into town.

Power Disruption – there is currently no power in Lancelin and it is expected that this disruption may continue for the remainder of the day. There are several burnt-out poles requiring attention and Western Power are on site working to restore power as soon as possible. Power poles into the Lancelin Sports Complex have also been affected.

Drone Interference - it has been confirmed that a drone was flying in the airspace above the bushfire which prevented DFES from aerial watering for approximately one hour, adversely affecting the firefighting effort and potentially placing firefighters, residents, and infrastructure at risk. This incident is under investigation by Police.

“On behalf of Council I’d like to express our grateful thanks to the fire brigades, volunteers, DFES, Shire staff, and all the emergency service providers who were involved in the containment efforts last night that protected properties and lives in Lancelin,” said Shire President Wayne Fewster.

“I’d also like to thank all the private contractors who provided heavy machinery to assist with the firefighting, as well as the members of the public who were affected for your patience and cooperation during this incident.”

Further updates will be provided as more information comes to hand. In the meantime, please refer to https://www.emergency.wa.gov.au for the latest fire information.
