On Wednesday 2 July, the Shire of Gingin proudly launched its NAIDOC Week celebrations at the Lancelin Primary School End of Term Assembly. Representatives from the Shire’s Community Development, Communications and Marketing, and Rangers teams joined students and staff for this special occasion.

Each year, National NAIDOC Week is celebrated across Australia in the first week of July (Sunday to Sunday). It recognises and honours the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week also provides an opportunity for all Australians to learn more about First Nations cultures and histories and to join in celebrating the world’s oldest continuous living cultures.

This year, the Shire of Gingin partnered with Lancelin Primary School to create a unique series of NAIDOC-themed bookmarks. Students from Pre-Primary to Year 6 were invited to design artwork reflecting the themes of NAIDOC Week. Once submitted, our Community Ranger, Sharlena - who originates from Bidyadanga community (Karajarri people) that belong to the Kimberley Region of Western Australia - selected her favourite designs from each year group, choosing two artworks per year group to feature on the bookmarks.

The Shire’s Communications and Marketing team completed the final design work on the back of the bookmarks and prepared them for printing and distribution. To recognise the students’ creativity, the selected artworks were also framed and presented to the young artists, along with NAIDOC-themed children’s books.

These special bookmarks are now available to the community free of charge and can be picked up from:

  • Lancelin Primary School
  • Gingin Administration Office
  • Lancelin Administration Office/Lancelin Library
  • Gingin Community Resource Centre
  • Lancelin Community Resource Centre

The Shire of Gingin is proud to celebrate NAIDOC Week and to support local projects that deepen understanding and appreciation of First Nations cultures within our community.
