If you see a strange-looking Toyota Prado travelling in the Shire, it may well be the ARRB Network Survey Vehicle.
ARRB has been engaged by WALGA to conduct a road condition survey of designated sealed and unsealed roads in the Shire of Gingin, as part of the Roads 2040: Regional Strategies for Significant Local Government Roads initiative. They will be commencing survey work in the Northern Wheatbelt Region in August, and are expected to take approximately 6 to 8 weeks.
The ARRB Network Survey Vehicle (as shown below) is a fully integrated mobile data collection system that can measure multiple pavement condition parameters such as roughness, rutting and macro-texture, simultaneously in a single pass.
The data is collected and reported according to current Austroads data collection test methods. At the same time, the NSV also collects digital video imaging from multiple cameras, which can be used to identify pavement surface defects, monitor the condition of roadside assets, and undertake road safety audits.
All of this data collection occurs at normal driving speeds so there will be no disruption to other road users.
Once the data is collected the Shire will be able to use it to:
- inform road asset decisions and update asset databases.
- assist in preparation of project proposals to Regional Road Groups.
- demonstrate the before event condition of assets should there be a natural disaster.
WALGA will also be able to use it to report on the state of the road network and advocate for funding.
