Past Event

NAIDOC Week runs from 3-10 July and is an opportunity to celebrate the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island People.

This year’s theme is ‘Get up! Stand Up! Show Up! You can learn more about the theme at https://www.naidoc.org.au/awards/current-theme

The Shire of Gingin is celebrating NAIDOC Week by providing the following list of new books to the Gingin and Lancelin libraries. Each book caters to a different age group and allows you to explore and learn the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island People.

  • My Lost Mob by Venetia Tyson caters to ages 3-8. Children will be captivated by the bright colours and Australian animals which bring to life this entertaining tale of a young emu who has lost his mob and sets out to find it.

  • Ceremony by Adam Goodes, Ellie Laing & David Hardy caters for ages 4+ years. Beautifully illustrated, this book is joyful and full of fun. Ceremony invites you to celebrate the rich traditions of dance, family, community and caring for Country from the world's oldest continuous culture.

  • Kookoo Kookaburra by Gregg Dreise caters for early childhood and young readers. In a story about friendship, humility, and forgiveness, Kookoo eventually learns that kindness is like a boomerang - if you throw it often, it comes back often.

  • Young Dark Emu – A True History by Bruce Pascoe caters for children 10 + years old. This book is a highly anticipated junior version of Bruce Pascoe’s multi award-winning book. Using accounts of early European explores, colonists, and farmers, Brue Pascoe compellingly argues for a reconsideration of the hunter-gatherer label for pre-colonial Aboriginal Australians. This book asks young readers to consider a different version of Australia’s history pre-European colonisation.

  • Welcome to Country by Marcia Langton is the 2nd edition to a travel guide to Indigenous Australia. It highlights myriad ways to engage and deepen our knowledge and appreciation of the First peoples through travel. Everything from arts centres to tours is covered in this guide, and there are also fascinating insights into Indigenous cultures and histories, as well as etiquette for visitors.

The books will be on display for the duration of NAIDOC Week for everyone to enjoy and then available to loan.
