Media Statement - Gingin Triathlon Postponed to November 2020

Published on Monday, 16 March 2020 at 3:48:41 PM

The Shire of Gingin has made the difficult decision this morning to postpone the Gingin Triathlon until November 2020.

A WA State of Emergency was declared yesterday, 15 March 2020 by the Premier, Mark McGowan. Details however, are yet to be forthcoming regarding what this will mean for WA communities.

Given advice from the Federal Government issued on Friday, 13 March that all events expecting 500 + attendees be cancelled in order to mitigate the spread of Covid-19 (Coronavirus), the Shire decided to still make the decision to postpone the Triathlon in any case. By taking this measure to slow down the spread, the aim is that the country’s health services will not be unduly overtaxed dealing with those who do fall ill with Covid-19.

It is unfortunate that the Triathlon will not occur this weekend as planned on 22 March but the Shire plans to reschedule the event to occur in November.

Participators will be contacted in due course by the Shire of Gingin and will have the option to receive a full refund of their participation fee or alternatively, may hold over their participation fee to compete in the in the Triathlon when it is run in November 2020 instead.

Event sponsors and volunteers will also be individually contacted by the Shire to advise them of the Shire’s decision and discuss their funding or volunteering for the event.

Queries regarding this decision may be directed to Cher Groves, the Shire’s Coordinator for the Gingin Triathlon, on (08) 9575 5138 during office hours.

-Ends-
