This morning, 22 July 2025, the Cook Labor Government released the list of successful recipients of the 2025-26 CoastWA grant program. The Shire of Gingin is thrilled to share that it has been awarded $150,000 in emergency funding to address the significant and escalating erosion impacting the northern foreshore of Lancelin.
This announcement comes as a welcome relief to the Shire, local residents and key business owners, who have all expressed concern over the rapid loss of coastal land in the area. The emergency funding will support critical works to mitigate further damage, with a particular focus on the vulnerable stretch of dune in front of the Lancelin Sands Hotel.
Shire of Gingin President, Cr Linda Balcombe addressed two letters to the Hon. Rita Saffioti MLA expressing the need for urgent emergency funds to be identified by the State Government, the first letter dating 5 June 2025 and the second dating 16 July 2025, we are very grateful to have had our concerns heard and emergency funds granted.
In a statement from the Hon. Rita Saffioti MLA, Deputy Premier and Minister for Transport, she said:
“In response to the rapid erosion situation in Lancelin, the State Government will also provide one-off emergency funding to the Shire of Gingin to help them implement immediate solutions.”
The northern foreshore has experienced significant accelerated erosion in recent years, with approximately 25–30 metres of dune and vegetation lost since 2019. Notably, around 15-18 metres has been eroded since 11 February 2025 alone and on one occasion measurements recorded 1 metre of dune lost in one night. This erosion has occurred at an alarming rate than previously forecasted, highlighting an urgent need for responsive coastal protection works.
Shire President, Cr Linda Balcombe welcomed the announcement:
“The Shire is pleased and thankful for the funding approved by the Minister and State Government, this emergency funding is a vital step forward in our efforts to protect and stabilise the northern foreshore of Lancelin.”
Cr Balcombe added ‘The coastal engineer is presently working with the Shire on the design and timeline for these emergency protection works to occur as quickly as possible.’ and, “By working together with the State Government, we can ensure a stronger long-term plan to protect our coastline.
The Shire of Gingin remains committed to working closely with coastal engineers, the community and relevant state agencies to deliver targeted and effective erosion management solutions, ensuring the long-term sustainability of the Lancelin foreshore.
