Wondering how the permit to burn process works? Here’s a quick rundown:

  • We issue Permits to Burn and set the terms/conditions under which permitted burning can occur.
  • Conditions may include (but are not limited to): having 3+ people present at all times, extinguishing burns by specific times, having access to water supply for extinguishing and not burning on days when the wind exceeds certain speeds or when the Fire Danger Rating (FDR) is HIGH or above.

  • You must comply with the terms/conditions outlined on your permit or you run the risk of a fine and fire escape.
  • This includes registering burns with DFES and notifying nearby landowners.
  • Remember, don’t burn when the FDR is HIGH or above! It is a condition of your permit! Burning on a HIGH FDR day risks fines and fire escape.

  • DFES simply registers your burn but doesn’t enforce, police or advise on Shire conditions regarding your permit to burn.
