Published on Wednesday, 24 December 2025 at 8:42:31 AM

At its Ordinary Council Meeting on 16 September 2025, Council resolved to take proactive steps to address community concerns identified in the Borderline Satisfaction and Low Satisfaction results of the Community Survey 2025.

Council committed to providing a public update within three months outlining actions taken to improve performance in these areas.

The key areas of concern included communication, community facilities, consultation opportunities, road infrastructure, environmental management and coastal erosion. An overview of actions taken in the last three months is provided below.

Quality, frequency and accessibility of Shire communications:

  • Frequent and timely communications (including after work hours) published on our social media channels and website.
  • 64.1% increase in Facebook views (732,330 views).
  • 45.6% increase in content interactions.
  • 387 posts across Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn.
  • Community survey results showed 56.4% of respondents wanted a monthly e-newsletter; since September, seven new subscribers have joined the Country & Coast e-Newsletter.
  • Utilisation of digital sign in Gingin townsite.
  • Event flyers and the Country & Coast newsletter continue to be printed monthly in four local newspapers to improve accessibility for residents who prefer printed information

Community buildings, halls and public toilets:

  • Delivered capital work upgrades at Lancelin community units and commenced works planning for upgrades at other community buildings and halls.

Opportunities for you to be consulted and provide feedback on local issues:

  • Five Strategic Direction Community Workshops were advertised in October to gather community ideas and feedback to inform the Strategic Community Plan.
  • Registrations allowed for three workshops to proceed, sessions were successfully held in Gingin, Redfield Park and Lancelin, with consultants capturing valuable community input.
  • A call for expressions of interest was issued for the Gingin Heritage Trail Working Group, a once-off project group established to provide local insight and help shape the future of heritage trails within the Gingin townsite.

Road infrastructure:

  • Increased focus on maintenance grading of gravel roads.
  • Commenced works planning for gravel re-sheet works on Bennies and Sandringham Road plus upgrades and Cowalla Road.

Paths and trails conservation and environmental management:

  • Commenced works planning, obtaining quotes and community feedback for the Heritage Trail Upgrade in Gingin.

Management of coastal erosion:

Council continues to address coastal erosion through both short-term mitigation and ongoing annual programs.

  • In September, sand renourishment works were completed in front of the Lancelin Sands Hotel as a short-term response to erosion in that area. To source this material, a shallow layer of sand (approximately 250mm) was scraped from a section of beach slightly further north of the affected area.
  • In December, 4000 cubic metres of imported material was placed near the Grace Darling Park/Edward Island Point Beach access area. This annual renourishment program is supported through Coastal Adaptation Pathways (CAP) grant funding.

An independent peer review of the Coastal Hazard Risk Management and Adaptation Plan (CHRMAP) has been completed, and two meetings of the Community Reference Group have been held.
