The Shire of Gingin would like to extend its thanks and appreciation to the City of Stirling and the Northern Beaches Alliance for the past several months of collaboration, and more recently for providing advice and materials to try and slow the continued erosion near the Lancelin Sands Hotel. We also want to thank the owners/lessees of the Caravan Park and the Hotel for allowing plant and materials to access the area over the weekend.
The Shire has been working with this group for several months and the City of Stirling actively assisted the Shire by supplying temporary geo-fabric and rock bags to complete stage 1 of the rehabilitation and sand renourishment works on Friday and Saturday.
The Shire was hopeful that the erosion had slowed to a point that would allow dune rehabilitation works to be undertaken without any other actions, however the area was further impacted during the evening of Wednesday 20 August and morning of Thursday 21 August, with the erosion just one metre from breaching the North End Caravan Park. Fortunately, together with our Coastal Engineer we had already prepared a draft dune rehabilitation design for this area and as a result, were able to engage and mobilise local contractors to act swiftly. The Shire wishes to extend its thanks to these local contractors for modifying their work schedules to undertake these emergency works.
The rock bags and geo-fabric are now in place in front of the Lancelin Sands Hotel dune frontage with the aim to protect the remaining frontage until the main dune rehabilitation design can be fully completed and works procured. The Shire has yet to formalise the grant agreement and receive funds from the Department of Transport (DoT) for the planned works but is expecting this to occur within the fortnight, allowing sand renourishment works to occur in September.
Unfortunately, we are already seeing the expected accelerated erosion around the sides of the works but have factored this into expectations, and the main DoT funded dune rehabilitation works should occur before this becomes a major issue, however this will be monitored closely.
The Shire requests community members to avoid walking on the temporary geo-fabric, and dune rehabilitation.
