The Shire of Gingin is increasingly concerned by the nature and volume of public commentary being directed towards the organisation and its staff.
The Shire acknowledges and respects the community's right to express views, ask questions and hold local government accountable. Constructive discussion and respectful debate are important parts of a healthy and democratic community.
However, recent commentary across social media platforms and some media outlets has escalated to a point where staff are being personally targeted. In many instances, information being circulated is inaccurate, misleading or unverified, and the cumulative impact of this commentary is creating significant psychosocial risks within the workplace.
Temporary Chief Executive Officer, James Bayliss said the Shire was deeply concerned about the growing impact on staff.
"Our staff are dedicated professionals who come to work every day to serve the community. They should not have to endure personal attacks, intimidation or ongoing commentary that impacts their wellbeing."
"There is a significant difference between constructive feedback and conduct that becomes harmful, hurtful or targeted at individuals. If community members choose to engage, we are asking that conduct remains respectful."
Shire employees are members of this community. They come to work each day committed to delivering services, supporting residents and implementing the decisions of Council. Like all workers, they have the right to perform their duties in a safe, respectful and psychologically healthy workplace.
The ongoing need to respond to accusations and media enquiries is placing a significant burden on organisational resources. Time and effort that would otherwise be directed towards serving the community is increasingly being diverted to addressing inaccurate claims and managing the impacts of ongoing public criticism.
The Shire has also sought advice from legal representatives and the Local Government Insurance Scheme (LGIS) regarding its obligations and the protections available to staff in response to recent events. Investigations are also underway regarding recent incidents involving the disclosure of confidential information and anonymous online profiles. Furthermore, any threat made against a person or property will be treated seriously and referred to Western Australia Police.
Community members who have genuine concerns regarding Shire operations, Council decisions or governance matters are encouraged to raise those concerns through the appropriate formal channels which are outlined in our Customer Service Charter. Respectful and constructive engagement assists the Shire to properly investigate, consider and respond to matters raised by the community.
The Shire calls on all members of the community to engage respectfully, seek information from reliable sources and work together to foster a positive and constructive environment for everyone who lives, works and volunteers in the Shire of Gingin.
