As Shire President, I would like to extend my deepest condolences following the tragic passing of a young man at the Moore River Estuary in Guilderton yesterday morning, Tuesday 30 September.

On behalf of Council, Shire staff, and the wider community, I wish to convey our heartfelt sympathy to the victim’s family, friends and all those impacted by this devastating loss. I would also like to extend my best wishes to the six other swimmers involved in the incident who are still recovering and receiving treatment. A tragedy such as this is felt across our whole community, and our thoughts are with everyone grieving during this very difficult time.

I would also like to acknowledge and thank the first responders and community members who acted with courage and compassion at the scene. Their efforts in such distressing circumstances are deeply appreciated.

At this time, the WA Police are undertaking an investigation and the Shire will be deferring enquiries in relation to the incident to the Police. It is requested that the investigation be allowed to progress without speculation, and while we understand that the community and media may have questions, it is important that the Shire allow the WA Police to provide accurate information on this matter. The Shire does not intend to provide any further comment at this time.

The Shire of Gingin stands alongside our community in mourning this loss, and we will continue to offer support where possible.
