Shire of Gingin Outlines Next Steps Following Ministerial Meeting on Northern Lancelin Coastal Erosion

Published on Friday, 10 July 2026 at 10:44:00 AM

The Shire of Gingin would like to provide an update to our community following last week's meeting with the Minister and representatives from relevant State Government agencies to discuss the ongoing coastal erosion challenges affecting northern Lancelin.

This meeting established a clearer pathway to progress investigations into emergency coastal protection options and implement more substantive coastal management strategies and protection measures. This meeting marked what is hoped will be the first of many constructive and collaborative discussions focused on developing practical, longer-term solutions for the community.

The Shire appreciates the State Government's commitment of $458,250 in CoastWA funding to implement emergency mitigation works and support further thorough investigations. This funding provides an important opportunity to further understand the challenges facing the coastline and to identify feasible options for the future.

In the meantime, dune stabilisation works already programmed by the Shire continue with crews filling and placing rock bags. These works are intended to provide interim protection while the next stages of investigation and planning are progressed.

The Shire considers it essential that broader solutions beyond sand nourishment are considered and, in collaboration with state agencies, will be exploring short-term options that offer greater cost benefit, ensuring that any investment delivers lasting value for the community.

The Shire is also progressing plans for a community workshop involving State agencies and coastal experts. Further planning and coordination is required to ensure the session is informative, clear and productive for our community.

Shire President Cr Linda Balcombe said the meeting represented an encouraging step forward toward a coordinated response.

"This meeting was an important milestone in ensuring all levels of government are working from the same understanding of the challenges facing north Lancelin and the actions required moving forward," Cr Balcombe said.

"Our focus is now on maintaining momentum. We want to see investigations commence as soon as possible so that informed decisions can be made on the most effective long-term solution for our community."

The Shire remains committed to advocating strongly for the coastal erosion issues at northern Lancelin and will continue working collaboratively with State Government agencies, technical experts and the community to progress practical, evidence-based solutions. The Shire will continue to keep our community informed as discussions progress and further opportunities for engagement become available.
